The City of Hudson was designated as the #1 socio-economic stressed city in New York State. With a population of 7,000, 25% of the families live below the poverty level, 25% of the households are female-headed with children (no husband present), 39% of the adults do not have a high school diploma. The City of Hudson also is rated nationally as one of the lowest per capita districts, with less than 9% of the residents holding bachelor degrees. A large percentage of the students in the Hudson City School District come from families whose primary means of support is a public welfare program. The district has been flagged with poor academic performance under the federal No Child Left Behind Act and has an unusually high suspension rate as well as a 30% dropout rate.

It is the goal of the Hudson Youth Center (HYC) to offset this spiraling problem by extending a helping hand to the local youth both scholastically and socially. The HYC is located in the heart of Hudson and is a newly renovated and redesigned educational, cultural, and recreational center for youth to develop into productive leaders of tomorrow. The center serves approximately 500 youth from the city of Hudson with 65% male and 35% female participation. The racial make-up of the youth is estimated at 50% African American, 40% Caucasian and 10% Hispanic. In 2005, approximately 500 youths between the ages of 5 to 17 signed up and utilized the center daily from 3 - 9 p.m. The center currently offers homework help provided by certified teachers, a state-of-the-art computer lab, organized activities including sports, music, and art workshops. It is a safe place for recreational activities and the facility includes a regulation hardwood basketball court. All programs and activities are closely supervised and monitored by adult staff.
